Chancellors is a regular pub very near the river, though without a river view, specialising in pizza. There is some outside seating in addition to the main pub dining room. Charles McCluskey took over this place in 2020, having worked in Brooklyn. The pizzas here are New York style rather than Neapolitan, so the crusts are thin and crisp rather than soft and chewy. It has become wildly successful, doing around three hundred pizzas on a Saturday night.
The menu is simple, with just a selection of a few pizzas (nine on offer today). There are a few dips also available such as garlic and, chilli, but that is about it. Booking is a tricky process. They do walk-ins, but if you want to reserve then you can reserve your dough, but not a guaranteed seat. The tomatoes used are apparently San Marzano, and the pizza that I had was nicely made. The crust was indeed crisp but not too hard, and the toppings generous. This was certainly a good pizza, and better than some other thin-crust pizzas that I have tried over the years (12/20). It doesn't compare to the Roman-style pizza (also a thin, crisp pizza) I had at Pizza Bar on the 38th, but then not much does.
You just order at the bar counter, so service is fairly limited, but the staff were friendly and pizzas are delivered to your table. My bill was just the cost of the pizza, so £13.95, though you could of course add to this with drinks. Overall, this was a pleasant experience, though the level of hype around this place seems hard to justify. Just forget the media fever and come here to enjoy a nicely made pizza.
